A JUBILEE MOMENT – MDUMC CELEBRATES FIFTY YEARS OF MINISTRY
On July 13, 1958, led by Rev. D. Lawrence Landrum, Jr., forty-four people gathered for worship at the former Chapman’s Corner Restaurant on Old Katy Road. The church was officially chartered on September 14, 1958. Under the leadership of Rev. Landrum, the church continued to grow and on Christmas Eve 1961 the church’s 400 members met for the first worship service in their new sanctuary on Memorial Drive.
On Palm Sunday night in 1979, there was a large fire at the church that began in the office area. Police surmised that there had been a break-in and that person perhaps started the fire. The offices were destroyed along with the choir room and other areas. Most of the roof of Wesley Hall was burned away. The Houston Fire Department put out the call for additional trucks just to spray water on the roof of the sanctuary. The fear was that the wooden shingles would catch on fire from sparks. In spite of the fire, MDUMC held Easter Services with a packed sanctuary the following Sunday.
